Brainfriendly Learning eBook Ron Fitzgerald Reviews

This book certainly helped my high school son focus on his best ways of learning and thinking. I especially appreciate the fact that it got him thinking about college majors and possible career paths in relation to his learning style and brain preferences. This is an important and practical handbook for teenagers who want to improve learning and begin career planning.
Dr. Ron Fitzgerald's Brain-friendly Learning A Powerful Handbook for Teenagers provides a readable clearly written tool that can help teens to learn how to learn. Every teen, like all humans, has unique multiple capabilities for learning. Drawing on Howard Garner's multiple intelligencies theory Fitzgerald explains how the brain works best and how to use it effectively. His goal is to help any high school or middle school student gain more learning, thinking, and career power by understanding and applying recent brain research. The book is intended to be used for self-study by teenagers who want to improve their learning. It also can be used by teachers to convert traditional techniques into more brain-friendly techniques. By becoming aware of their unique learning capabilities and consciously applying their inherent intelligences teens can experience increased joy and learning successes.

This brief book starts by providing data drawn from schools to support his contention that brain-friendly learning works much better than traditional approaches where everyone is expected to learn in the same way. He helps readers to understand that individuals receive and process information in different ways depending upon whether an individual has a more dominant left side or right side brain with each side having unique learning capabilities. Using simple readable tables readers can do self analyses to determine their own unique brain preferences and learning styles for receiving information. With this information readers can capitalize on their learning style to improve learning and guide efforts to improve areas.

Fitzgerald assists teens to learn by noting means for enhancing learning such as using graphic organizers, recognizing that the brain tends to remember meaningful information, teaching and discussing information, and using multiple senses raather than one sense.

Having received information, the next step in learning is using one's intelligences for thinking about and using information. Fitzgerald provides succinct descriptions of Howard Gardner's seven and one half intelligences as well as emotional intelligence and the occupational roles that tend to use each of these intelligencies. With most people having one or two dominant intelligences or talents, he stresses that understanding one's intelligencies can be advantageous in selecting school majors and careers. He provides a Brain Preference Test for readers so that by answering a set of simple questions they can learn their own brain intelligences and learning styles.

Brain-Friendly Learning, directed at a student audience, is a welcome addition to Fitzgerald's earlier Smart Teaching Using Brain Research and Data to continously Improve Learning that focused on a teacheer audience and provided more detailed research data to substantiate his brain focused learning. Brain-Friendly Learning offers an easily understood tool that conscientious readers can use to increase learning, enhance their intellectual growth, and make their educational experiences more enjoyable.

Young folks are highly intelligent and capable of tremendous amounts of complex learning. They have, however, grown up in a world immersed in fast-paced intellectual impulses. The result has been that a high percentage of the youth of today need specific modality preferential methods employed allowing them to grasp complex meanings, correlate such information with their own personal worlds, and retain what learned by "linking" that knowledge to previously learned data.

Dr. Fitzgerald is a true pioneer in designing and supporting his system of "Brain-Based Teaching and Learning." Through his efforts, thousands of adolescents have realized success and enjoyed personal pride - many for the very first time.

Brain-Friendly Learning A Powerful Handbook for Teenagers is a superb vehicle for high-achieving teens to learn, one that is valuable in its diversity of possible uses.

For example
a. This work would guide a new or seasoned teacher to instruct in the right-brained preferential method necessary to assist and support the basic left-brained "norm."
b. Any teacher can use this work as an incentive to encourage high-achieving students, those who want to learn and grow intellectually and achieve their full potential.
c. An extra-curricular task, one guided by the instructor, that a student can pursue weekends, vacations, and in spare time.
d. Teach right-brained preferential learners while simultaneously guiding new-to-the-classroom teachers.
e. Use this tool to help right-brained preferential learners to develop their own learning skills to apply when they are exposed to traditional classrooms.

All of the editions written by Dr. Ron Fitzgerald are a gift to the realm of education - especially to those teachers who want to be great, to those whose primary focus is still the student and the success of his/her learning.

Having been a classroom teacher for thirty years and a dedicated follower/user of "Brained-Based Learning and Teaching," I can unequivocally suggest that every teacher try this great new tool.
