Pretending Normal, formerly Lies Imitating Life, was a past quarter finalist in Ray Bradbury’s New Century New Writer Award contest. It was also a past semi-finalist in the Breakthrough Novel Award contest.
1976 Before-Sara Polokovich wants out of Norwood, Pennsylvania, population 4,582, where the undertaker and the butcher are the same person. All she has to do is earn a scholarship. Just two more years…but until then, she pours over classics to strengthen her comprehension skills, reviews for the SAT, and continues to request college brochures from every school in the northeast.
Sara’s just buried her mother, her father drinks too much, and her kid sister won’t leave her alone. Why can’t her life be normal? Even half-normal? Why does Frank, (she refuses to think of him as her father anymore), spend all of his time in the garage with that damn ‘57 Chevy? And why does he have to hide bottles all over the house; in the red metal cupboard in the garage, behind the faded orange curtain in the kitchen, under the sink in the bathroom? Why can’t anybody talk about what’s happening?
As Sara struggles to free herself from a life of dysfunction and disease, she will learn the true depths of a parent’s love and the ultimate sacrifice given— and taken— in the name of that love. Pretending Normal follows Sara Polokovich’s coming of age as she discovers the truths about family with all of its flaws and weaknesses as the bond that holds one to another, in love, loyalty, even death.
BONUS Included with this ebook is the emotion-filled short story, The Death of Mary Alice Olivetti.
Pretending Normal eBook Mary Campisi
It was a book that not everyone would have an interest in. Many people read to escape and like feel good story lines. But, this book takes the reader through some difficult aspects of life, that many people would rather not face. The protagonist faces many of her life's challenges with difficulty, and finds herself on the other side of them having grown. The ending was a surprise. Loved this book. Great portrayal of adolescent growth.Product details

Pretending Normal eBook Mary Campisi Reviews
This isn't as good as her other books, but for the price it wasn't. all bad. It could have been better. It seemed as if she didn't. Know anyone who had a decent life. I guess if you think your life is bad, this book could make you see that it could always be worse.
I can't believe this was written by the same author who wrote her other uplifting books. This left you feeling very depressed about life.
Campus delivers the right tone of a teen in turmoil, eying the adults and her peers cautiously, knowing everyone tells lies or pretends normal.
Narration rings true, without becoming a moral soapbox or melodramatic. Enjoyed the read, even if some of it is a bit closer to home.
This was a very thoughtful, well written book. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find well written, real and simple YA books that have nothing to do with the supernatural or overly sentimental. This was just an honest to goodness good book. The character development was done with such a sweet touch, especially Ms. O'Grady. Honestly, I would have loved to have seen even more of her in the book, as she was the most interesting character. Good read and beautiful cover art!
Is that not what every one of us does----pretend normal? Might be an eye-opener for some; for others it reaffirms what we already know. Such is life, and the reminder that each of us has one or more something(s) we have learned to pretend about, perhaps almost even having developed it into a reflexive behavior, is courageously and poignantly demonstrated in this novel. Well done.
one of favorite authors has done it again. such a easy read and so easy to relate to the characters. young girl growing
up in a small town, maybe not someone you know but someone you can relate too. the wrong guy to love, a father who
is grieving for his wife and trying to control all things around him. such a great author capturing a piece of small town life
recommend it highly...hope you enjoy it as much as i did.....
I've read other titles by Mary Campisi which drew me into the story from the onset. I had trouble getting into this one, though. I continued reading to the end and enjoyed the second half of the story more than the first but it didn't have the same "have to read it now" feeling that I usually experience when reading one of her stories.
